zoom

zoom
i. An abnormally steep climb in which speed is traded for height. This is carried out near the ground by aircraft flying at very high speeds. Zoom maneuvers are normally carried out by aircraft with a high-thrust weight ratio.
ii. A technique of a high-performance aircraft climbing steeply at a high altitude at an optimized speed. The aircraft normally accelerates to the maximum level Mach number, trades speed for height, and reaches to an exceptional height far above the sustained ceiling level. The speed at that height is still very high, unlike a zoom at low altitudes. The altitude thus achieved is called a zoom ceiling.
An example of zoom climb and zoom ceiling.
